    Summary

Rheumatoid arthritis can affect the larynx, specifically the cricothyroid and cricoarytenoid joints. This study details the full spectrum of inflammatory and destructive changes, including ankylosis, in these small laryngeal joints.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Otolaryngology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease.
    • Laryngeal involvement in RA is less commonly reported but can occur.
    • Previous studies have noted RA in the larynx, but detailed pathology is often lacking.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the pathological changes of rheumatoid arthritis in the cricothyroid and cricoarytenoid joints.
    • To emphasize the full spectrum of RA-related pathology in these laryngeal joints.
    • To assess the susceptibility of these joints to inflammation, destruction, and ankylosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of five larynges.
    • Detailed description of pathological changes in the cricothyroid and cricoarytenoid joints.
    • Identification of rheumatoid nodules and granulomatous inflammation.

    Main Results:

    • The cricothyroid and cricoarytenoid joints exhibit the full spectrum of rheumatoid arthritis pathology.
    • Both joints are equally affected by inflammation, joint destruction, and ankylosis.
    • Rheumatoid nodules were observed in two cases; granulomatous areas near cricothyroid joints in two others.

    Conclusions:

    • The small joints of the larynx are susceptible to the characteristic pathological changes of rheumatoid arthritis.
    • Cricothyroid and cricoarytenoid joints can undergo inflammation, destruction, and ankylosis due to RA.
    • Laryngeal manifestations of RA, including nodules and granulomas, can occur.
