    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Surgery

    Background:

    • Intrahepatic gallstones (hepatolithiasis) are a complex surgical challenge.
    • Understanding the epidemiology and characteristics of hepatolithiasis is crucial for effective management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To document the current status of hepatolithiasis in Japan.
    • To identify patterns in stone composition, location, and incidence.
    • To inform the development of optimal treatment strategies.

    Main Methods:

    • A nationwide survey involving over 160 institutions.
    • Collection and analysis of data from 1,590 hepatolithiasis cases.

    Main Results:

    • The most common stone type was bile pigment calcium stones.
    • Stones were predominantly located in the left hepatic duct.
    • Significant geographical variations in incidence were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Hepatolithiasis exhibits distinct epidemiological and etiological characteristics in Japan.
    • Further research into diagnostic procedures and treatment options is warranted.
