Motor nerve conduction indicators in uremic neuropathy

    Summary

    Facial nerve testing is a sensitive indicator for detecting uremic neuropathy in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Combined nerve conduction studies can identify most cases of this condition.

    Background:

    • End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is associated with peripheral neuropathy.
    • Uremic neuropathy affects motor and sensory nerves, impacting patient quality of life.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the sensitivity of facial nerve latency and motor nerve conduction velocities in detecting uremic neuropathy.
    • To identify the most sensitive electrophysiologic indicator for uremic neuropathy among commonly studied motor nerves.

    Main Methods:

    • Investigated 84 patients with primary ESRD using facial nerve latency and motor nerve conduction velocities (peroneal, median, ulnar).
    • Assessed electrophysiologic evidence of motor neuropathy in the studied nerves.
