    Background:

    • Emerging cases of tissue invasion by unnamed marine Vibrio species, similar but not identical to Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio alginolyticus, have been reported.
    • These novel Vibrio strains present diagnostic challenges due to their resemblance to known species.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with severe, widespread tissue infection involving blood and leg lesions.
    • A halophilic, Gram-negative bacterium isolated from the patient exhibited Vibrio genus characteristics.
    • The isolate demonstrated positive lactose fermentation and ONPG reactions, with lower salt tolerance than V. parahaemolyticus and V. alginolyticus.

    Findings:

    • The isolated bacterium is consistent with the lactose-positive (L+) Vibrio described by Hollis et al. (1976).
    • Autopsy revealed severe necrotizing cellulitis and vasculitis, confirming extensive tissue infection.
    • This case identifies a distinct Vibrio species capable of causing severe human infections.

    Implications:

    • This finding expands the spectrum of Vibrio-associated human diseases.
    • Accurate identification of this Vibrio species is crucial for appropriate clinical management and public health surveillance.
    • Further research is needed to understand the pathogenicity and epidemiology of this emerging marine pathogen.
