    Summary

    Mitochondrial malic enzyme (MEM) gene frequencies were analyzed in an Indian population. MEM1 and MEM2 alleles showed a balanced distribution, with no significant sex-based differences or deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

    Background:

    • Mitochondrial malic enzyme (MEM) plays a role in cellular metabolism.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the gene frequencies of mitochondrial malic enzyme (MEM) in an Indian population.
    • To investigate potential sex-based differences in MEM gene frequencies.
    • To assess the genetic equilibrium of MEM alleles within the studied population.

    Main Methods:

    • Starch-gel electrophoresis was used to analyze MEM in 182 brain samples.
    • Samples were from Indian subjects in Calcutta, Eastern India.
    • Gene frequencies were calculated for MEM1 and MEM2 alleles.

    • The estimated gene frequencies for MEM were 0.56 for MEM1 and 0.44 for MEM2.
