Acute calcific quadriceps tendinitis

R B Macurak, J A Goldman, E Hirsh

    Southern Medical Journal
    |March 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Acute calcific quadriceps tendinitis causes knee periarthritis, presenting with cellulitis and tendon sheath tenderness. Radiographs reveal tendon thickening and amorphous calcification that resolves during treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedics
    • Radiology
    • Rheumatology

    Background:

    • Acute calcific quadriceps tendinitis is a potential cause of acute periarthritis of the knee.
    • Physical examination may reveal cellulitis and a tender tendon sheath.

    Observation:

    • Lateral soft tissue roentgenograms can demonstrate tendon thickening.
    • Amorphous calcification flecks may be visible within the tendon near its attachment.

    Findings:

    • Hyperostosis of the patella near the tendon attachment is common but represents well-defined ossification, not linked to acute symptoms.
    • The amorphous calcium deposits associated with acute tendinitis resolve rapidly and are not evident on subsequent imaging.

    Implications:

    • Understanding the transient nature of calcific deposits in acute tendinitis is crucial for accurate diagnosis.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Radiographic findings of amorphous calcification are specific to the acute phase and resolve with healing.
