    Summary

    Hepatic friction rubs may occur in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. These rubs might be linked to uremia or the dialysis process itself, as seen in two case studies.

    Background:

    • Maintenance hemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for end-stage renal disease.
    • Uremic pericarditis is a known complication of advanced kidney failure.
    • Chronic hemolytic anemia can occur in patients with kidney disease.

    Observation:

    • Two patients on maintenance hemodialysis developed hepatic friction rubs.
    • Comprehensive investigations, including autopsy, were performed.
    • No definitive cause for the rubs was found, excluding other conditions.

    Findings:

    • Uremic pericarditis was a concurrent condition in both patients.
    • One patient also had chronic hemolytic anemia.
    • The hepatic friction rubs were not attributable to other identifiable causes.

    Implications:

    • Hepatic friction rubs may be an under-recognized sign associated with uremia.
    • The dialysis procedure itself could potentially contribute to their development.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the pathophysiology and clinical significance of these rubs in dialysis patients.
