    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Entomology
    • Parasitology
    • Ophthalmology

    Background:

    • Eyelid infestations by ticks are uncommon, posing risks of ocular complications.
    • Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick) is a common ectoparasite found in North America.

    Observation:

    • A case of ocular eyelid infestation by Dermacentor variabilis in a 34-year-old male is reported.
    • The patient had exposure to an outdoor environment, specifically sleeping in an open-floored tent in Indiana.

    Findings:

    • Mechanical removal of the tick using cilia forceps was performed with careful attention to detail.
    • Complete removal of tick mouthparts was ensured to prevent further tissue damage or infection.

    Implications:

    • Prompt and proper removal of ticks can prevent serious ocular and systemic issues.
    • This case highlights the importance of vigilance for tick-borne disease risks, even in seemingly minor infestations.
