    Summary

    Background:

    • Intravenous anesthetics are crucial for maintaining sedation during surgical procedures.
    • Etomidate and thiopentone are commonly used agents with distinct pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the cumulative hypnotic effect and hemodynamic stability of etomidate versus thiopentone in female patients undergoing postpartum sterilization.

    Main Methods:

    • Fifty fit, female patients received four consecutive intravenous doses of etomidate (10 mg) or thiopentone (125 mg) to maintain sleep after epidural block.
    • Sleep duration, blood pressure, injection pain, local inflammation, tremor, and post-waking sleepiness were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • Etomidate demonstrated a significantly lower cumulative hypnotic effect compared to thiopentone.
    • Etomidate did not cause significant blood pressure depression, whereas thiopentone led to progressive hypotension.
    • Injection pain (68%) and tremor were common with etomidate, while prolonged sleepiness was more frequent with thiopentone.

    Conclusions:

    • Etomidate offers a favorable hemodynamic profile for maintaining sedation in this patient population.
    • Despite its cardiovascular stability, etomidate's adverse effects, including injection pain and tremor, require consideration.
