    Area of Science:

    • Exercise Physiology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • Hemoglobin's oxygen affinity is crucial for oxygen delivery.
    • Factors influencing hemoglobin-oxygen binding during exercise are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate changes in hemoglobin's oxygen affinity (standard P50) during and after exhaustive treadmill exercise.
    • To explore the correlation of these changes with biochemical factors like 2,3-DPG, ATP, and electrolytes.

    Main Methods:

    • 16 male subjects performed 10-minute exhaustive treadmill exercise.
    • Standard P50 was measured during and after exercise.
    • Levels of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), ATP, and serum electrolytes (Na+, K+, Cl-) were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Standard P50 significantly increased during and for 30 minutes post-exercise.
    • 2,3-DPG levels rose post-exercise and correlated with P50.
    • ATP, Na+, K+, Cl-, and osmolarity also showed significant elevations during or post-exercise.

    Conclusions:

    • Exhaustive treadmill exercise induces a small, temporary increase in hemoglobin's oxygen affinity.
    • This change appears to be influenced by multiple factors, including 2,3-DPG, ATP, and electrolytes.
