    Summary

Postnatal development of rat trochlear nerves shows increasing fiber numbers and bimodal size distribution by 21 days. This study provides insights into motor unit heterogeneity in extraocular muscles (EOM).

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Developmental Biology
    • Histology

    Background:

    • Understanding motor unit heterogeneity is crucial for extraocular muscle (EOM) function.
    • Postnatal development involves significant changes in nerve structure and innervation patterns.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To conduct a morphometric analysis of postnatal differentiation in the rat trochlear nerve.
    • To establish a basis for understanding motor unit heterogeneity in EOM.

    Main Methods:

    • Light and electron microscopy were used to examine rat trochlear nerves.
    • 35 animals were studied from 7 to 90 days postnatal (dpn).

    Main Results:

    • Mean fiber number increased from 222 at 7 dpn to 274 in adults.
    • Fiber size distribution became bimodal by 21 dpn, with distinct small and large myelinated fibers.
    • Unmyelinated axon proportion decreased significantly postnatally.
    • Myelinated fiber diameter correlated more strongly with age and body weight than fiber number.
    • Ultrastructural changes suggested a loss of polyneuronal innervation during the third postnatal week.

    Conclusions:

    • Rat trochlear nerve development involves significant fiber number and size changes.
    • Postnatal differentiation contributes to motor unit heterogeneity in EOM.
    • Observed changes support the size principle and developmental alterations in innervation.
