Serum selenium levels in malignant lymphoproliferative diseases

    Summary

    Serum selenium levels were found to be significantly lower in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia compared to healthy individuals. Other malignant lymphoproliferative diseases showed no difference in selenium levels.

    Background:

    • Malignant lymphoproliferative diseases (MLD) encompass a range of cancers affecting lymphocytes.
    • Selenium is an essential trace element with known roles in immune function and antioxidant defense.
    • Alterations in trace element status can occur in various disease states, including cancer.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum selenium levels in patients diagnosed with malignant lymphoproliferative diseases.
    • To compare selenium concentrations between different subtypes of MLD and healthy controls.
    • To assess the impact of initial cancer treatment on serum selenium levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum selenium concentrations were quantified using proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE).

    • Serum selenium levels in patients with Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin lymphoma were comparable to the control group.
    • A statistically significant reduction in mean serum selenium concentrations was observed in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) compared to controls (5.2 vs. 7.9 microgram/100 ml, P < 0.005).
    • Serum selenium levels remained unchanged in 11 patients within 8 weeks of initiating radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

    Conclusions:

    • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is associated with significantly lower serum selenium levels.
    • Other malignant lymphoproliferative diseases, such as Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, do not show altered serum selenium concentrations compared to healthy individuals.
    • Initial cancer treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy did not appear to affect serum selenium levels within the observed timeframe.
