    Summary

    Viral myocarditis can occur during influenza A outbreaks. This study found a 9% incidence of myocarditis in conscripts during an influenza A epidemic, often indicated by ECG changes.

    Background:

    • Viral myocarditis is a serious cardiac condition.
    • Influenza A virus is a known cause of viral infections.
    • Understanding the cardiac complications of influenza is crucial for public health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence of viral myocarditis during an influenza A epidemic.
    • To investigate the clinical presentation and diagnostic markers of influenza-associated myocarditis.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 104 conscripts hospitalized with respiratory infections.
    • Serological confirmation of influenza A virus infection.
    • Serial electrocardiography (ECG) and echocardiography for cardiac assessment.
    • Measurement of creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) isoenzyme levels.

    • Six out of 41 confirmed influenza A patients (14.6%) developed acute myocarditis.
