    This study found that 24-hour exposure to 446 torr hypoxia did not cause retinal hemorrhage or leakage, even with exercise. The hypoxia level was insufficient to induce these specific ocular effects.

    Background:

    • Acute mountain sickness (AMS) can cause symptoms like headache and nausea.
    • Pulmonary edema can occur at high altitudes due to hypoxia.
    • Retinal changes have been observed in some individuals exposed to high altitude.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the occurrence of retinal hemorrhage and fluorescein leakage after prolonged decompression.
    • To assess the impact of hypoxia and exercise on retinal vasculature.
    • To determine if 24-hour exposure to 446 torr is a sufficient hypoxic stress to cause retinal changes.
