    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Mental Health Research

    Background:

    • Suicidal ideation is a critical concern in psychiatric care.
    • Understanding the psychological correlates of suicide intent is essential for effective intervention.
    • Both depression and hopelessness are recognized risk factors for suicidal behavior.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relative contribution of hopelessness and depression to suicide intent.
    • To examine the relationship between suicide intent, hopelessness, and depression in an inpatient population.

    Main Methods:

    • Seventy-three inpatients were assessed using standardized psychological scales.
    • Beck's Suicide Ideator Scale measured suicidal intent.
    • Beck's Hopelessness Scale and MMPI Depression Scale assessed hopelessness and depression, respectively.

    Main Results:

    • Suicide intent demonstrated a stronger correlation with hopelessness than with depression.
    • Statistical control for hopelessness eliminated the observed relationship between depression and suicide intent.

    Conclusions:

    • Hopelessness appears to be a more significant factor than depression in driving suicide intent in this inpatient cohort.
    • Clinical assessments for suicide risk should prioritize the evaluation of hopelessness.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the nuanced interplay between these psychological constructs.
