Oxiperomide in tardive dyskinesia

    Summary

    Oxiperomide effectively reduced tardive dyskinesia symptoms in patients. This dopaminergic antagonist showed significant improvement without worsening Parkinsonism, suggesting distinct dopamine receptor roles.

    Background:

    • Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is often treated with dopaminergic blockers, but this can increase Parkinsonism.
    • Oxiperomide is a dopaminergic antagonist with potential for selective action.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oxiperomide in treating tardive dyskinesia.
    • To assess if oxiperomide differentially affects TD and Parkinsonism.

    • A blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 10 patients with tardive dyskinesia.
    • Assessment of tardive dyskinesia and Parkinsonism symptoms, including eye blinking rates.
