Background:

Persistent amblyopia and related visual disorders in children necessitate early detection.
Routine screening programs aim to reduce the incidence of these conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the administrative feasibility and effectiveness of a routine visual screening program for preschool children.
To assess the rate of detection of visual abnormalities missed by general practitioners (GPs) and welfare clinics.
To gauge parental acceptance of the screening initiative.

Main Methods:

Implementation of a routine visual screening program by orthoptists in Ayrshire.
Data collection on attendance rates, referrals, and confirmation of abnormalities over the first three months.
Examination of children in community settings close to their homes.
