A normal chest X-ray does not rule out aortic dissection. Aortography is crucial for diagnosing aortic dissection when clinical suspicion is high.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Radiology
    • Thoracic Surgery

    Background:

    • Aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition requiring prompt diagnosis.
    • Diagnostic imaging plays a critical role in identifying aortic dissection.
    • Chest roentgenograms are a common initial imaging modality.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of aortic dissection were reviewed.
    • Initial chest roentgenograms in these patients did not suggest the diagnosis.
    • Clinical suspicion for aortic dissection was present despite non-diagnostic imaging.

    Findings:

    • A normal or non-diagnostic chest roentgenogram can occur in patients with aortic dissection.
    • The absence of radiographic findings does not exclude the diagnosis of aortic dissection.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • Aortography remains an essential diagnostic tool for suspected aortic dissection.
    • Clinical judgment should guide the decision for further imaging, such as aortography.
    • Early and accurate diagnosis of aortic dissection is vital for patient outcomes.
