    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Somatosensory System
    • Cortical Connectivity

    Background:

    • The first somatosensory area (SI) processes tactile information.
    • Interhemispheric connections, known as callosal connections, link corresponding areas in the two brain hemispheres.
    • Understanding the distribution of these connections is crucial for comprehending sensory processing and integration.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the distribution and laminar location of callosal neurons in the contralateral SI cortex of cats.
    • To correlate the location of callosal neurons with the functional map of the trunk representation in the SI cortex.
    • To elucidate the role of callosal connections in integrating sensory information from the two body halves.

    Main Methods:

    • Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into the proximal limb and trunk representation zones of the SI cortex in 16 cats.
    • Retrogradely labeled callosal neurons in the contralateral SI cortex were identified.
    • Electrophysiological recordings were used to map the trunk representation and relate it to the distribution of labeled neurons.

    Main Results:

    • Callosal neurons were primarily located in layers III and VI of the contralateral SI cortex.
    • These neurons were concentrated in two distinct regions corresponding to the dorsal and ventral midline trunk representations.
    • Neurons in these midline zones exhibited bilateral receptive fields, encompassing parts of the trunk midline.

    Conclusions:

    • The study concludes that specific midline zones within the SI cortex establish mutual callosal connections with their contralateral counterparts.
    • These callosal links are essential for the interhemispheric integration of sensory information from the two body halves.
    • The findings highlight the importance of callosal connectivity in creating a unified body representation in the somatosensory cortex.
