Managerial responses to mental disorders among employees
Abstract:
Production, sales, and industrial relations managers in a multinational manufacturing firm were surveyed to determine how they would respond to seven standardized case situations. The data indicate substantial concern about employees and their problems. However, recognition of psychiatric disorders, discrimination between cases amenable to informal lay counseling versus those requiring expert attention, and readiness to use professional resources promptly and appropriately were limited. Responses to an alcoholism case stood out from the foregoing, and can be related to the organization of antialcoholism programs in industry.
