Ischemic gastritis and duodenitis

T Force, D MacDonald, O E Eade

    Digestive Diseases and Sciences

    Summary

Chronic ischemia caused erosive gastritis and duodenitis in a 69-year-old woman. This was linked to severe atheromatous disease affecting splanchnic arteries, leading to abdominal angina.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Vascular Medicine
    • Ischemic Syndromes

    Background:

    • Chronic ischemia can affect gastrointestinal organs.
    • Splanchnic artery disease is a significant cause of abdominal pain.
    • Atheromatous disease contributes to vascular compromise.

    Observation:

    • A 69-year-old woman presented with symptoms of abdominal angina.
    • Endoscopy revealed erosive gastritis and duodenitis.
    • The patient had severe atheromatous disease affecting all three splanchnic arteries.

    Findings:

    • A direct correlation was observed between chronic splanchnic ischemia and the development of erosive gastritis and duodenitis.
    • Severe atheromatous disease of the splanchnic arteries was identified as the underlying cause of ischemia.
    • Abdominal angina symptoms were consistent with the ischemic insult to the gastrointestinal tract.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering splanchnic artery ischemia in patients with unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms and vascular risk factors.
    • Early diagnosis and management of splanchnic artery disease may prevent severe gastrointestinal complications.
    • Further research into ischemic gastroduodenitis is warranted to understand its pathophysiology and optimize treatment strategies.
