    Summary

    Cigarette smoking, but not marijuana use, was linked to higher minute ventilation and perceived exertion during exercise in young adults. Aerobic power remained unaffected across all groups studied.

    Background:

    • Physiologic responses to exercise can be influenced by lifestyle factors such as substance use.
    • Understanding the impact of marijuana and cigarette use on exercise physiology is crucial for occupational health assessments.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the physiological responses to graded exercise in young adult blue-collar workers based on their use of marijuana and/or cigarettes.
    • To compare exercise parameters including heart rate, oxygen consumption, ventilation, and perceived exertion among different substance use groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Four groups of young adult blue-collar workers were categorized: marijuana users, cigarette smokers, users of both, and non-users.
    • Covariate analysis of variance was employed to control for demographic variables (race, age, height, weight).
    • Key physiological measures including body composition, hematocrit, hemoglobin, heart rate, oxygen consumption, minute ventilation, and perceived exertion were assessed during graded exercise.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were found between groups in body fat, lean body mass, hematocrit, or hemoglobin.
    • Heart rate and oxygen consumption responses to graded exercise were similar across all substance use groups.
    • Cigarette smokers exhibited higher mean minute ventilation and perceived exertion compared to non-smokers, although aerobic power and physical work capacity were not significantly different.

    Conclusions:

    • Cigarette smoking is associated with altered pulmonary function and perceived exertion during exercise, independent of marijuana use.
    • Marijuana use did not significantly impact the measured physiological responses to graded exercise in this cohort.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects of chronic cigarette and marijuana use on exercise physiology in older populations.
