    Background:

    • Renal failure is associated with prolonged bleeding times.
    • The underlying mechanisms for bleeding disorders in uremia are not fully understood.

    • Venous tissue specimens were collected from healthy subjects and patients with renal failure.
    • Prostacyclin-like activity, measured by inhibition of platelet aggregation, was assessed during incubation.
    • Activity levels were compared between uraemic and control groups.

    • Venous tissue from uraemic patients demonstrated significantly higher prostacyclin-like activity compared to controls.
    • This enhanced inhibitory activity in uraemic samples remained detectable after extensive washing.
