Background:

Reading acquisition is a complex process involving multiple cognitive skills.
Phonemic awareness, the ability to manipulate individual sounds in spoken language, is a key predictor of reading success.
Difficulties in phonemic analysis are often associated with reading disabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the phonemic analysis abilities of first-grade children with varying reading proficiency.
To determine if deficits in phonemic analysis differentiate children with severe reading disability from those with mild or no reading difficulties.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 45 first-grade children with average intellectual ability was assessed.
Participants were categorized into three groups: average readers, mild reading difficulty, and severe reading disability.
Phonemic analysis skills, specifically the ability to segment spoken syllables into individual speech sounds, were evaluated.

Main Results:

Children with severe reading disability exhibited a significant deficit in phonemic analysis.
These children were unable to segment spoken syllables into individual speech sounds.
Phonemic analysis scores accurately distinguished the severe reading disability group from the other groups.
