    Background:

    • Sarcolemma, the cell membrane of muscle cells, plays a vital role in cellular structure and function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the dependence of rat heart sarcolemma structure and function on membrane lipids.
    • To elucidate the effects of specific phospholipases on sarcolemmal properties.

    Main Methods:

    • Isolated rat heart sarcolemma was incubated with phospholipase A, C, or D.
    • Structural changes were analyzed using electron microscopy (conventional and negative staining).
    • Functional assays included Ca2+ binding, Na+, K+-ATPase activity, Ca2+-ATPase activity, and adenylate cyclase activity.
