    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the incidence and patterns of fetal breathing movements (FBM), fetal trunk movements (FTM), and total fetal activity (TFA) in normal pregnancies.
    • To investigate the relationship between these movements and gestational age.

    Main Methods:

    • 100 normal pregnancies were studied.
    • One 30-minute recording of fetal activity was obtained between 28 weeks and term.
    • Incidence, rate, and duration of FBM, FTM, and TFA were analyzed.

    • Mean incidences: FBM 37%, FTM 18%, TFA 53%. Mean breathing rate: 48/min. Mean movements: 29/30 min.

    • Fetal trunk movements (FTM) remain constant throughout the third trimester.
    • Fetal breathing movements (FBM) show a U-shaped incidence curve across gestation.
    • Fetal breathing rate increases with gestational age, while overall movement frequency decreases, with duration compensating to maintain constant FTM incidence.
