Spinal melanotic clear-cell sarcoma: a light and electron microscopic study

J B Parker, P B Marcus, J H Martin

    Cancer
    |August 15, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

This study describes a rare melanotic spindle-cell tumor originating from a thoracic spinal nerve root. The tumor, characterized by clear cells and schwannoma-like areas, showed lung metastasis, suggesting a partially dedifferentiated malignant melanotic schwannoma.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pathology
    • Neurosurgery

    Background:

    • Melanotic tumors can arise from various tissues, presenting diagnostic challenges.
    • Spinal nerve root tumors are uncommon and require precise histopathological classification.
    • Clear-cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses is a distinct soft tissue sarcoma.

    Observation:

    • A melanotic spindle-cell tumor was identified originating from a thoracic spinal nerve root.
    • The tumor's bulk comprised glycogen-rich clear cells, mimicking clear-cell sarcoma.
    • Microscopic examination revealed schwannoma-like areas within the primary tumor.

    Findings:

    • The tumor metastasized to both lungs, indicating aggressive behavior.
    • Ultrastructural examination showed a highly developed basal lamina.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The combined features suggest a partially dedifferentiated malignant melanotic schwannoma.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the histogenetic classification of melanotic tumors.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate treatment and prognosis of spinal nerve root tumors.
    • Understanding the differentiation pathways of melanotic tumors aids in therapeutic strategies.
