    Summary

    This study found that prolactin levels remain normal in patients with severe hyperglycemia and diabetic precoma. Acute changes in blood glucose or osmolality did not significantly alter prolactin secretion.

    Background:

    • Prolactin's potential diabetogenic effects have been previously suggested.
    • Diabetic precoma involves severe hyperglycemia and metabolic disturbances.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum prolactin levels in patients with diabetic precoma.
    • To determine if prolactin secretion is altered by acute changes in hyperglycemia and osmolality.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum prolactin was measured in 12 patients with diabetic precoma upon admission.
    • Prolactin levels were reassessed after rehydration, which normalized blood glucose and serum osmolality.

    Main Results:

    • Basal serum prolactin levels were within the normal range (12.0 +/- 3.4 ng/ml).
    • Rehydration significantly reduced blood glucose and osmolality but did not affect serum prolactin levels (9.9 +/- 2.5 ng/ml).

    Conclusions:

    • Prolactin does not appear to be involved in the metabolic derangements of diabetic precoma.
    • Acute fluctuations in blood glucose and osmolality do not significantly impact prolactin secretion in this patient group.
