Steroid receptors and breast cancer

Endocrine therapy can significantly prolong life in about a third of patients with advanced mammary carcinoma, but until recently it has been impossible to predict which ones. Assays for receptors specific for estrogen and progesterone have made the predictive process more accurate, and antiestrogens are providing the basis for a new approach to therapy. Clinical applications are outlined.
