    Summary

    Individuals with selective absence of Immunoglobulin A (IgA) show an increased frequency of neoplasia. This study suggests IgA deficiency may increase the risk of cancers in the gastrointestinal and lymphoid tissues.

    Background:

    • Selective absence of serum Immunoglobulin A (IgA) has been linked to an increased frequency of neoplasia.
    • Previous studies suggest a potential association between IgA deficiency and cancer risk.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence of IgA deficiency in a cancer hospital population.
    • To determine if IgA deficiency is associated with specific types of cancer, particularly lymphoproliferative and gastrointestinal neoplasms.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 4,120 serum samples from a cancer-oriented hospital.
    • Calculation of IgA deficiency incidence within the patient cohort.
    • Comparison of IgA deficiency rates with normal blood donor populations and specific cancer diagnostic categories.

    Main Results:

    • The incidence of IgA deficiency in the cancer hospital was found to be 1:342 or 1:273.
    • This incidence is statistically similar to other patient groups but substatistically increased compared to normal blood donors (1:1,677).
    • Patients with lymphoproliferative disorders (1:253) and gastrointestinal neoplasms (1:125) showed a higher frequency of IgA deficiency.

    Conclusions:

    • Selective IgA deficiency may increase the risk of malignant changes in the gastrointestinal and lymphoid tissues.
    • The protective, anti-neoplastic role of IgA warrants further investigation.
