    Background:

    • Small intestinal carcinoma is a rare neoplasm in sheep.
    • Previous data on its prevalence and gross pathology in sheep is limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report the prevalence and pathological findings of small intestinal carcinoma in sheep.
    • To describe the gross and histological features of the neoplasm.

    Main Methods:

    • Survey of 6,248 sheep from three export abattoirs in southern New South Wales.
    • Gross examination of the small intestine (jejunum and ileum).
    • Histological examination of neoplastic tissue, including assessment of metastatic spread.

    Main Results:

    • Seventeen cases of small intestinal carcinoma were detected (0.272% prevalence).
    • The neoplasm presented as a fibrous ring causing intestinal stenosis, with common metastasis to mesenteric lymph nodes.
    • Histologically, a desmoplastic reaction with scattered epithelial cells was observed, with rare mitotic figures.

    Conclusions:

    • Small intestinal carcinoma has a notable prevalence in the surveyed sheep population.
    • The gross and histological features provide a basis for diagnosis and understanding disease progression.
    • Further research into risk factors and pathogenesis is warranted.
