Biological variation in free serum hydroxyproline concentration

A B Gasser, R Wootton, S Beyeler

Clinica Chimica Acta; International Journal of Clinical Chemistry
    |September 8, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Controlling dietary hydroxyproline and standardizing blood sampling times significantly improve serum free hydroxyproline (FSHP) measurements. This reduces biological variation, enhancing the accuracy of FSHP concentration analysis.

    Area of Science:

    • Biochemistry
    • Clinical Chemistry
    • Human Physiology

    Background:

    • Accurate biochemical measurements require controlling both analytical and biological variations.
    • Serum free hydroxyproline (FSHP) concentration is a biochemical constituent of interest.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the existence of a diurnal rhythm in human FSHP concentration.
    • To determine if eliminating dietary hydroxyproline reduces intra-individual variance.

    Main Methods:

    • Two experiments were conducted on normal subjects.
    • Blood samples were analyzed for FSHP concentration.
    • Dietary intake of hydroxyproline was controlled in one experiment.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

  • A significant diurnal variation (p < 0.001) in FSHP concentration was observed, with a 20% range.
  • Controlling dietary hydroxyproline led to a substantial reduction in within-subject variation.
  • Conclusions:

    • A significant diurnal rhythm affects FSHP concentration in humans.
    • Eliminating dietary hydroxyproline sources is crucial for precise FSHP determination.
    • Standardized blood sampling times are recommended for accurate FSHP analysis.
