    Background:

    • Congenital asymmetrical crying facies (CACF) is a minor congenital anomaly.
    • It results from hypoplasia or absence of the depressor anguli oris muscle.
    • CACF presents as lower lip asymmetry during crying in neonates.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence of CACF in a neonatal population.
    • To investigate potential associations between CACF and other congenital malformations, particularly cardiac defects.
    • To explore familial aggregation and potential etiologic factors for CACF.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 1,600 neonates.
    • Inclusion criteria: neonates born at J.L.N. Medical College, Ajmer, India (Jan-Aug 1979).
    • Data collection included physical examination, family history, and follow-up assessments.

    Main Results:

    • Ten infants (6.3 per 1,000) exhibited CACF.
    • Two neonates with CACF had congenital heart disease (ventricular septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot) (p < 0.001 vs. control).
    • Five infants had other minor congenital malformations; familial occurrence was noted in mothers and siblings.

    Conclusions:

    • CACF is a relatively common minor congenital malformation.
    • The presence of CACF necessitates a thorough evaluation for other congenital anomalies, especially cardiovascular defects.
    • While CACF effects persist, affected infants generally show normal growth and development by 3-6 months.
