Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis: segmental or generalized disease

B M Tolia, H R Newman, B Fruchtman

    The Journal of Urology
    |July 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Focal xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) can be diagnosed incidentally during kidney surgery. Early segmental excision of focal XGP may prevent further kidney damage.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Urology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare, chronic kidney inflammation.
    • It often presents with urinary tract infection, obstruction, or calculi.
    • Diagnosis is typically made post-nephrectomy due to non-function or suspected carcinoma.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report on cases of focal xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.
    • To evaluate the potential for preventing renal destruction through early intervention.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of 4 cases with focal xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.
    • Analysis of diagnostic methods and surgical interventions, including segmental excision.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Focal XGP was diagnosed incidentally in 3 out of 4 patients during segmental excision.
  • Segmental excision allowed for diagnosis and treatment of localized disease.
  • Conclusions:

    • Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis may begin as a localized process.
    • Early detection and segmental excision of focal XGP can potentially prevent extensive renal damage.
