    Summary

Pediatric thyroid cancer, including papillary and follicular adenocarcinoma, generally has a good prognosis. Even with distant metastases, most young patients achieve recovery and remain disease-free long-term.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Oncology
    • Endocrinology
    • Cancer Research

    Background:

    • Thyroid cancer in children is rare but requires careful management.
    • Previous cervical irradiation is a known risk factor for pediatric thyroid cancer.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes, and prognosis of pediatric thyroid cancer.
    • To analyze the impact of histotype and metastatic disease on patient outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 21 pediatric thyroid cancer patients treated between 1956 and 1975.
    • Review of treatment modalities including surgery, external irradiation, and radioiodine therapy.
    • Long-term follow-up to assess recurrence, metastasis, and survival rates.

    Main Results:

    • Papillary adenocarcinoma was the predominant histotype (17/21 patients).
    • Two patients presented with lung metastases at diagnosis; one showed complete resolution after radioiodine (131I) treatment.
    • All patients survived, with most achieving apparent recovery after multimodal treatment, despite initial recurrences or metastases.

    Conclusions:

    • Pediatric thyroid cancer, even with metastases, often has a favorable prognosis with appropriate multimodal therapy.
    • Surgical management (total thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection) is the cornerstone of treatment.
    • Radioiodine therapy can be effective for metastatic disease, though outcomes may vary by histotype.
