    Summary

    Immune complexes were elevated in patients with active polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis. These immune complexes may play a role in the development of these inflammatory conditions.

    Background:

    • Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) are inflammatory conditions.
    • The role of immune complexes in PMR and GCA pathogenesis is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and levels of immune complexes in patients with PMR and/or GCA.
    • To determine if immune complex levels correlate with disease activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Sera from 74 patients with active or inactive PMR and/or GCA were analyzed.
    • The Raji cell radioimmunoassay was used to detect immune complexes.
    • Density gradient analysis was performed on one serum sample.

    • Patients with active disease (PMR or GCA) showed higher levels of immune complexes compared to those with inactive disease.
    • No significant difference in immune complex levels was observed between PMR alone and GCA alone groups.

    • Immune complexes are present in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis.
    • Elevated immune complex levels are associated with active disease in these conditions.
    • Immune complexes may be implicated in the underlying pathogenesis of PMR and GCA.
