The therapist's self-disclosure in individual psychotherapy: research and psychoanalytic therory

There appears to be a trend, paralleled by the development of object-relations theory, towards an increasing degree of self-disclosure of the therapist in individual psychotherapy. Research on the subject of self-disclosure of the therapist has tended to focus on experimental interviews and on the dyadic effect of self-disclosure. This author suggests that a useful area for future research will be the realtionship between therapist's self-disclosure and the analysis of transference. Research needs to be done on actual individual psychotherapy.
