    Summary

    Bacterial endocarditis (BE) in rabbits increased circulating immune complexes (CIC). Immunization heightened CIC levels, suggesting septic emboli, not immune complexes, initiate kidney inflammation in early BE.

    Background:

    • Bacterial endocarditis (BE) is a serious infection.
    • The role of immune complexes in BE-induced organ damage is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immune response and kidney involvement in rabbits with experimentally induced bacterial endocarditis.
    • To determine the contribution of immune complex deposition versus septic emboli to renal inflammation.

    Main Methods:

    • Induction of non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis followed by intravenous injection of live streptococci in rabbits.
    • Immunization of rabbits with heat-killed streptococci prior to BE induction.
    • Measurement of agglutinins and circulating immune complexes (CIC).
    • Histopathological examination of renal tissue.
