Self-administered intelligibility practice for esophageal speakers

Summary

Esophageal speech intelligibility improved significantly with self-administered training. Both naive listeners and the speakers themselves confirmed similar gains in speech clarity after the practice regimen.

Background:

Esophageal speech is a method of alaryngeal speech production for individuals who have undergone laryngectomy.
Intelligibility is a critical factor in the functional communication success of esophageal speakers.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of a self-administered, multiple-choice intelligibility training program for esophageal speakers.
To assess intelligibility improvements from the perspective of both naive listeners and the speakers themselves.

Main Methods:

Eight participants who use esophageal speech engaged in a structured, self-administered training regimen using specific materials.
Intelligibility was assessed using "before" and "after" test tapes.
Listeners included a naive group unfamiliar with the speakers and the speakers themselves.
