Primary intracranial leiomyosarcoma. Case report with ultrastructural study

W R Anderson, J D Cameron, S H Tsai

    Journal of Neurosurgery
    |September 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

A rare sellar and suprasellar leiomyosarcoma, a primary intracranial tumor of mesenchymal origin, was identified. Ultrastructural analysis suggests a possible vascular origin for this unusual brain tumor.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuropathology
    • Oncology
    • Vascular Biology

    Background:

    • Primary intracranial tumors of mesenchymal origin are exceptionally rare.
    • Leiomyosarcomas typically arise in soft tissues, with intracranial presentation being uncommon.

    Observation:

    • This study details a leiomyosarcoma in the sellar and suprasellar region of a 35-year-old male patient.
    • Light microscopic and ultrastructural examination provided key diagnostic features.

    Findings:

    • The tumor exhibited characteristics consistent with leiomyosarcoma.
    • Ultrastructural findings pointed towards a potential origin from blood vessels within the sellar/suprasellar region.

    Implications:

    • This case expands the known spectrum of rare intracranial mesenchymal tumors.
