H Yonas, S Patre, R J White

    Journal of Neurosurgery
    |October 1, 1980

    Summary

This study reports a rare combination of an anterior spinal artery anomaly and a berry aneurysm. Embryological factors underlying this unique vascular presentation are discussed.

    Area of Science:

    • Vascular anatomy
    • Embryology
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Spinal artery anomalies are rare vascular variations.
    • Berry aneurysms are typically found in cerebral circulation.
    • The co-occurrence of these two conditions is exceptionally uncommon.

    Observation:

    • A case presenting an anomaly of the anterior spinal artery is described.
    • This anomaly was found in conjunction with a berry aneurysm.
    • The specific location and characteristics of the anomaly and aneurysm were noted.

    Findings:

    • The anterior spinal artery anomaly represents a unique vascular malformation.
    • The co-existence with a berry aneurysm is a novel observation.
    • Embryological development is reviewed to explain this combined anomaly.

    Implications:

    • Understanding the embryological basis can aid in diagnosing similar rare vascular conditions.
    • This case highlights the importance of considering rare anatomical variations in spinal vascular disease.
    • Further research into spinal vascular embryogenesis may reveal more insights into such anomalies.
