Reactive arthritis after Campylobacter jejuni enteritis

    Summary

    Reactive arthritis can develop after Campylobacter jejuni infection. Testing for this enteric infection is crucial when reactive arthritis is suspected, especially in HLA-B27 positive individuals.

    Background:

    • Reactive arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis.
    • It often affects peripheral joints and can be triggered by infections.

    Observation:

    • Six adult patients developed reactive arthritis following enteric infection with Campylobacter jejuni.
    • Four patients also exhibited other reactive signs like conjunctivitis and sterile leukocyturia.
    • Five of the six patients carried the HLA-B27 antigen.

    Findings:

    • Campylobacter jejuni infection is a potential trigger for reactive arthritis.
    • The presence of HLA-B27 antigen may be associated with this condition.
    • A history of joint disease was noted in four patients.
