  • Plasma appearance and disappearance curves were analyzed using a deconvolution computer program to quantify zinc absorption.
  • Main Results:

    • Serum zinc concentrations were significantly lower in Crohn's disease patients (9.18 ± 2.3 μmol) compared to controls (13.6 ± 1.73 μmol; P < 0.0005).
    • Low serum zinc correlated with low serum albumin, questioning its utility as a sole indicator of zinc deficiency.
    • Zinc absorption was considerably impaired in Crohn's disease patients (9–45%) compared to normal subjects (38–75%).

    Conclusions:

    • While serum zinc is lower in Crohn's disease, it may not accurately reflect zinc status due to albumin correlation.
    • Impaired zinc absorption is a significant finding in Crohn's disease patients.
    • This malabsorption of zinc is a likely contributor to zinc deficiency in the context of Crohn's disease.
