Neurosecretory granule-like structures in lymphomas

G A Herrera, J L Crofts, C R Roberts

    Human Pathology
    |September 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Electron microscopy revealed unique dense granules in four non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases. These neurosecretory-like structures complicate differential diagnosis with neuroendocrine neoplasms.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pathology
    • Electron Microscopy

    Background:

    • Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are a diverse group of lymphoid malignancies.
    • Ultrastructural analysis is crucial for diagnosing and classifying certain neoplasms.

    Observation:

    • Round to ovoid, electron-dense, membrane-bound structures (100-300 nm) were observed in four primary abdominal non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases.
    • These structures were found in lymph nodes and spleen tissue.
    • The observed structures resembled neurosecretory granules.

    Findings:

    • The identified granules share ultrastructural similarities with neurosecretory granules.
    • It is hypothesized that these may represent atypical lysosomes, distinct from those typically found in lymphocytes.
    • Cytochemical examination is recommended for definitive characterization.

    Implications:

    • The presence of these neurosecretory-like structures in lymphomas poses diagnostic challenges.
    • Distinguishing lymphomas from neuroendocrine neoplasms using electron microscopy may become more difficult.
    • Further research is needed to understand the nature and origin of these structures.
