Bullous myringitis: its relation to sensorineural hearing loss

R Feinmesser, M J Weissel, H Levi

The Journal of Laryngology and Otology
    |June 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Bullous myringitis, often self-limiting, can cause temporary sensorineural hearing loss, particularly in the cochlea. Mycoplasma is identified as a likely cause of this hearing impairment.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Audiology

    Background:

    • Bullous myringitis is typically viewed as a benign, self-limiting ear condition.
    • Previous understanding underestimated the frequency of associated hearing loss in bullous myringitis.

    Observation:

    • A case study involving a 20-year-old female patient with bullous myringitis is presented.
    • The patient experienced transient sensorineural hearing loss during the illness.

    Findings:

    • The hearing loss was localized to the cochlea, indicating inner ear involvement.
    • Mycoplasma was identified as the highly probable causative agent for the bullous myringitis and associated hearing loss.

    Implications:

    • This finding suggests that sensorineural hearing loss may be a more common complication of bullous myringitis than previously recognized.

  • Early identification and potential treatment targeting Mycoplasma could be important in managing hearing deficits associated with this condition.
