    Summary

    Nuclear imaging did not enhance obstructive uropathy diagnosis over excretory urography. However, radionuclide imaging revealed decreased renal perfusion in severe obstruction and assessed kidney function effectively.

    Background:

    • Obstructive uropathy diagnosis often relies on excretory urography.
    • Nuclear imaging techniques are increasingly explored for renal function assessment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the added value of nuclear imaging compared to excretory urography in diagnosing obstructive uropathy.
    • To assess the ability of different imaging modalities to detect obstruction, determine lesion site/etiology, and evaluate renal function.

    Main Methods:

    • A study involving 50 patients with obstructive uropathy.
    • Comparison of excretory urography with nuclear imaging techniques, including rapid sequential radionuclide imaging and 131I Hippuran (o-iodohippurate sodium) and 99mTc glucoheptonate uptake.

    • Nuclear imaging did not improve obstruction detection or localization compared to excretory urography.

    • The degree of functional recovery could not be predicted by any method before relieving intrapelvic pressure.
    • 131I Hippuran appears most effective for assessing functional impairment in obstructed kidneys.
