    Summary

    Oral 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 improved calcium absorption in patients with malabsorption after small-intestinal resection. Further long-term studies are needed to compare its effects with conventional vitamin D.

    Background:

    • Small-intestinal resection or disease can lead to calcium malabsorption and steatorrhoea.
    • Vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption and bone health.
    • 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 is a vitamin D analog.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effect of oral 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 (1 alpha (OH)D3) on calcium absorption in patients with small-intestinal malabsorption.

    Main Methods:

    • Six patients with calcium malabsorption and steatorrhoea were treated with oral 1 alpha (OH)D3 for 3 months.
    • Calcium absorption, bone mineral content (BMC), and urinary calcium levels were monitored.

    Main Results:

    • A significant increase in calcium absorption was observed after 3 months of 1 alpha (OH)D3 treatment.
    • No significant change in bone mineral content (BMC) was noted.
    • Urinary calcium levels increased significantly during treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • Oral 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 can enhance calcium absorption in patients with small-intestinal malabsorption.
    • Long-term comparative studies are necessary to assess the efficacy and safety of 1 alpha (OH)D3 versus conventional vitamin D.
