    Background:

    • Finland implemented a systematic vaccination program including tetanus vaccinations in 1957.
    • The program effectively covers children up to school age.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess antibody concentrations against tetanus toxoid in Finnish adults.
    • To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the national tetanus vaccination program.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantification of IgG class antibodies against tetanus toxoid using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
    • Analysis of random samples from 240 Finnish adults across different age groups.

    Main Results:

    • High protective antibody concentrations (>= 0.01 U/ml) were found in 98.4% of 18-25 year-olds and 93.3% of 26-35 year-olds.
    • Lower protective levels were observed in older adults: 68.8% in 36-45 year-olds and 83.6% in those over 46.
    • Nearly half of individuals over 36 years had antitoxin levels below 0.05 U/ml, a level suggested to be minimally protective.

    Conclusions:

    • The national tetanus vaccination program demonstrates high effectiveness in younger Finnish adults.
    • A notable proportion of older Finnish adults may have suboptimal tetanus antibody levels, indicating potential waning immunity.
    • Booster vaccinations might be considered for older age groups to maintain protective immunity against tetanus.
