Vortex vein decompression for nanophthalmic uveal effusion

    Summary

    Nanophthalmic uveal effusion may stem from impaired vortex vein drainage. Decompressing these veins and draining fluid successfully reattached retinas in most treated nanophthalmic eyes.

    Background:

    • Nanophthalmos is characterized by a small, hyperopic eye with a thickened sclera.
    • Uveal effusion and nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachment are potential complications in nanophthalmic eyes.
    • Impaired vortex venous drainage through the thickened sclera is hypothesized to cause choroidal congestion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of vortex vein decompression in treating uveal effusion and retinal detachment in nanophthalmic eyes.
    • To support the hypothesis that choroidal congestion is the primary mechanism behind nanophthalmic uveal effusion.

    Main Methods:

    • Surgical intervention involving vortex vein decompression.
    • Adjunctive procedures included drainage of choroidal and/or subretinal fluid.
