    Summary

    Elevated circulating immune complexes were detected in jirds infected with Brugia pahangi. These immune complexes did not correlate with microfilariae levels, suggesting complex disease dynamics.

    Background:

    • Filarial nematode Brugia pahangi infections can elicit immune responses.
    • Circulating immune complexes (CICs) are potential biomarkers in parasitic diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and levels of CICs in jirds infected with Brugia pahangi.
    • To assess the relationship between CICs and microfilariae load.

    Main Methods:

    • Jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) were infected with Brugia pahangi larvae.
    • Sera were analyzed for CICs using a C1q binding assay (Clq-SP) and polyethylene glycol precipitation (PEG).
    • Results were compared between infected and control groups.

    Main Results:

    • Significantly higher CIC levels were observed in infected jirds compared to controls (P=0.001 for Clq-SP, P=0.005 for PEG).
    • Elevated CICs were found in 41% (Clq-SP) and 24% (PEG) of infected jirds.
    • No correlation was found between CIC levels and circulating microfilariae counts.

    Conclusions:

    • Brugia pahangi infection in jirds leads to increased circulating immune complexes.
    • The variability in CIC levels suggests individual host responses.
    • CICs are not directly correlated with microfilariae burden in this model.
